Species in News: Colobus congoensis (Likweli)
- Researchers have identified Colobus congoensis, commonly known as the Likweli, as a new species of African monkey found in Central Africa.
- The species lives in Lomami National Park and was first photographed in 2008.
- It has now been confirmed as a distinct species based on genetic tests and field observations conducted between 2018 and 2022.
- The Likweli is small and black, distinguished by an orange-cream patch around its mouth and a white patch under its tail.
- The study’s authors have proposed classifying the Likweli as ‘Endangered’ due to conservation concerns.
