Invasive Plants Supporting Butterflies in Assam (Raimona National Park)

  • A study conducted between 2022 and 2025 documented 220 butterfly species, 56 larval host plant species, and 41 nectar plant species in Raimona National Park, Assam.
  • The study found that invasive plant species such as Lantana camara, Chromolaena odorata, and Ziziphus mauritiana serve as major nectar sources for a large number of butterfly species.
  • Lantana camara attracted more than 30 butterfly species between April and October, while Chromolaena odorata supported 24 butterfly species from December to February.
  • Besides providing nectar for adult butterflies, several invasive plant species were also found to function as larval host plants, highlighting their ecological importance.
  • The researchers recommended maintaining small, carefully managed patches of Lantana camara, Chromolaena odorata, and Ziziphus mauritiana in suitable protected landscapes to ensure a continuous nectar supply for butterflies.
