Assam Floods: Changing Brahmaputra Course Intensifies Flood Crisis

Context

  • Severe flooding in Assam has impacted over 9 lakh people, with the state government describing the disaster as unprecedented in scale.
  • Unlike the usual pattern of flooding in lower Assam, this year’s floods have severely affected Upper Assam districts, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat.
  • The crisis was aggravated after an intense surge of water from Nagaland’s Mon district, highlighting the growing role of upstream hydrological events in Assam’s flood dynamics.

  • The Brahmaputra’s highly dynamic channel frequently changes its course and deposits large quantities of sediment, raising the riverbed and reducing its capacity to carry floodwaters.
  • Mon district (Nagaland) received more than one-third of its monthly July rainfall within nearly eight hours, triggering landslides that claimed nine lives and intensified downstream flooding.

Brahmaputra River

Way Forward

  • Strengthen the Brahmaputra Board by improving manpower, scientific expertise and technological capabilities.
  • Develop an integrated inter-state flood forecasting and early warning mechanism involving Assam and neighbouring upstream states such as Nagaland.
  • Shift from an embankment-centric strategy towards basin-wide, ecosystem-based and climate-resilient flood management to reduce long-term flood risks.
