The Road Ahead for the Asiatic Lion: Balancing Conservation and Development

Context

The Asiatic lion, found exclusively in and around Gujarat’s Gir landscape, has witnessed a remarkable recovery, with its population now exceeding 1,000 individuals. However, a proposal to divert nearly 75 hectares of reserved forest for limestone mining has raised concerns over the disruption of a crucial wildlife movement corridor along the coast.

  • The proposed mining project may require the removal of nearly 5,000 mature trees, potentially isolating a coastal lion population near Jafrabad from the main Gir population.
  • Lion numbers have increased significantly from around 100 – 150 in the 1960s to over 1,000 today, owing to a shift from protected-area conservation to a broader landscape-based conservation approach.
  • Disease remains a major concern. More than 20 lions died due to Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) in 2018, while cases of babesiosis have also been reported in 2026.
  • The IUCN Red List has upgraded the Asiatic lion from Critically Endangered to Endangered. However, its Green Status indicates that the species is still far from full ecological recovery.
