Nepal Earthquake and Cross Border Flooding: A Shared Disaster

Context

Natural disasters do not recognise political boundaries. A recent 4.4 magnitude earthquake near the Nepal China border triggered a major landslide and caused extensive damage to infrastructure and hydropower facilities in Nepal. The disaster also affected strategically important infrastructure around Gyirong Port, a major Nepal and China trade gateway, disrupting connectivity and supply chains.

The subsequent flooding in Nepal also raised concerns for downstream regions of India through major river systems such as the Gandak, Kosi and Ganga. The episode highlights the need for coordinated disaster management mechanisms among India, Nepal and China, particularly in a geographically fragile Himalayan region.

Geographical and Strategic Significance

The Himalayan region is highly vulnerable to earthquakes, landslides, floods and other natural hazards. The impact of such events can extend far beyond the location where they originate.

The earthquake and resulting landslide demonstrated this interconnectedness by affecting:

Better coordination can enable authorities to anticipate risks, communicate warnings promptly and organise evacuation and relief operations more effectively.

A cooperative approach to disaster management can help reduce the human, economic and infrastructural costs of disasters while strengthening resilience across the Himalayan region.
