Nepal Begins Safer Reconstruction After Catastrophic Floods

Context

Nepal has initiated an assessment of its reconstruction requirements following catastrophic floods that claimed at least 1,259 lives, while more than 4,200 people remained missing. Authorities estimated that nearly 20,000 houses would need to be rebuilt, with priority being given to safer locations as rescue, relief and restoration efforts continued.

The disaster has underlined the vulnerability of the Himalayan region to interconnected climatic, geological and hydrological hazards and the need to make reconstruction more risk-sensitive.
