AI-Powered ‘FarmGuard’ to Tackle Human Wildlife Conflict in Kerala

Why in News?

Kerala has deployed an AI-enabled ‘FarmGuard’ digital surveillance system in vulnerable forest-fringe areas to minimise human – wildlife conflict. The system has reportedly achieved a very high success rate in detecting and driving away wild animals approaching human settlements.

Key Features

  • AI-based detection: Uses high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging and night-vision technology to identify and differentiate humans from elephants, wild boars, bears and other wildlife.
  • Real-time alerts: When animals approach settlements, forest officials and Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) receive automated alerts through SMS, WhatsApp and other digital platforms.
  • Non-lethal deterrence: Multi-frequency acoustic devices use simulated animal calls and controlled sounds to safely discourage wildlife from entering human settlements.
  • Conservation technology: The initiative demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence can support wildlife conservation, reduce crop damage, protect human lives and promote human–wildlife coexistence.

Key Concepts

  • Human–Wildlife Conflict (HWC): Conflict arising from interactions between people and wild animals, resulting in damage to crops, property, livelihoods or loss of life.
  • Rapid Response Team (RRT): Specialised teams that respond quickly to wildlife-related emergencies and assist in conflict mitigation.
  • Artificial Intelligence in conservation: AI can facilitate species identification, real-time monitoring, threat detection and early-warning mechanisms.
  • Project Elephant (1992): A Centrally Sponsored Scheme aimed at elephant conservation, habitat protection and reducing human–elephant conflict.

Way Forward

Technology-based interventions should complement habitat restoration, wildlife corridors, early-warning systems and community participation. A combination of technological solutions and ecological measures can help achieve sustainable human–wildlife coexistence.
