• A lake is a large, inland body of water that sits in a natural basin, surrounded by land except where rivers or streams flow in or out. 
• Unlike lagoons, lakes are not connected to the ocean, and they’re generally bigger and deeper than ponds.
• Most natural lakes are found in mountainous regions, rift valleys, or areas shaped by glaciers. Typically, a lake will have at least one river or stream that acts as an outlet, helping to regulate its water level by draining away any excess.
• However, some lakes are found in what are called endorheic basins–these are areas where water doesn’t flow out to the sea. Instead, these lakes lose water only through evaporation or by seeping into the ground.
• The vast majority of the world’s lakes contain fresh water, and most of them are located in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in higher latitudes. Countries like Canada, Finland, and regions like Siberia are home to most of Earth’s freshwater lakes.
