India – China and the Brahmaputra: Managing a Shared River

China’s proposed hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo, known as the Brahmaputra in India, has renewed concerns over downstream water availability. The absence of a comprehensive water sharing agreement between India and China has further highlighted the challenges surrounding the management of transboundary rivers.

  • The Brahmaputra originates in Tibet as the Yarlung Tsangpo, enters India through Arunachal Pradesh, and eventually flows into Bangladesh. Its transboundary nature makes it strategically and economically important for all three countries.
  • India and China do not currently have a comprehensive water sharing treaty. Cooperation largely relies on limited mechanisms, including arrangements for exchanging hydrological information.
