Peru Earthquakes
- Location: Two earthquakes struck Chupaca Province in the Junín Region of central Peru, about 300 km east of Lima.
- Magnitude & Depth: The earthquakes measured 5.1 and 3.7 (Peru’s National Seismological Centre), occurring at depths of 24 km and 18 km, respectively. (The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre earlier reported the first quake as 5.6.)
- Impact: The earthquakes resulted in at least six deaths and 21 injuries, with 48 homes destroyed and 18 homes damaged, affecting around 300 people.
- Affected Area: Many houses in the affected communities are rudimentary adobe-block structures, making them more vulnerable to earthquake damage.
- Geographical Importance: Peru lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a major seismic belt that accounts for roughly 85% of the world’s seismic activity.
