Phu Quoc Island: Vietnam’s Largest Island in the Gulf of Thailand

Context

  • Phu Quoc was in the news after a tourist speedboat carrying Indian nationals capsized near the island, resulting in the death of 15 Indian tourists.

  • Rich in coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds and marine biodiversity. The island also contains Phu Quoc National Park and a Marine Protected Area.  

International Relations

  • Cambodia has historically laid claim to Phu Quoc (known in Cambodia as Koh Tral).
  • However, the island is under the sovereignty and administration of Vietnam, and the maritime boundary presently recognizes it as Vietnamese territory.
