A More Accurate World Map
The United Nations has endorsed a resolution encouraging wider use of the Equal Earth projection, a map design that offers a more accurate representation of the relative sizes of countries and continents.
The resolution, sponsored by Togo, received 164 votes in favour, with the United States voting against it. The Equal Earth projection presents Africa at a size much closer to its actual area, correcting the significant distortion seen in the traditional Mercator projection, which has been widely used since the 16th century.
The UN resolution does not prohibit the Mercator projection or mandate a specific replacement. Instead, it encourages governments and institutions worldwide to consider using the Equal Earth projection as a more geographically representative alternative.
