Project GIANT (Greenland Ice Sheet to Atlantic Tipping Points)
- Project GIANT is a five-year international research programme (2025 to 2030) spearheaded by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The initiative aims to examine how the rapid melting of Greenland’s ice sheet could disrupt Atlantic Ocean currents and potentially push them towards a critical tipping point.
- As part of the project, researchers have deployed a fleet of autonomous robotic vehicles in Greenland’s fjords to monitor how freshwater released from melting glaciers mixes with the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), helping scientists better understand its impact on global ocean circulation.
