AI-Powered ‘FarmGuard’ to Tackle Human Wildlife Conflict in Kerala
Why in News?
Kerala has deployed an AI-enabled ‘FarmGuard’ digital surveillance system in vulnerable forest-fringe areas to minimise human – wildlife conflict. The system has reportedly achieved a very high success rate in detecting and driving away wild animals approaching human settlements.
Key Features
- AI-based detection: Uses high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging and night-vision technology to identify and differentiate humans from elephants, wild boars, bears and other wildlife.
- Real-time alerts: When animals approach settlements, forest officials and Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) receive automated alerts through SMS, WhatsApp and other digital platforms.
- Non-lethal deterrence: Multi-frequency acoustic devices use simulated animal calls and controlled sounds to safely discourage wildlife from entering human settlements.
- Conservation technology: The initiative demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence can support wildlife conservation, reduce crop damage, protect human lives and promote human–wildlife coexistence.
