As Fungal Disease Hits Sugar Output in UP, a New Sugarcane Variety Offers Hope

As Fungal Disease Hits Sugar Output in UP, a New Sugarcane Variety Offers Hope

Context

Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a decline in sugarcane production, falling from 126.4 lakh tonnes in 2019-20 to 89.5 lakh tonnes in 2025-26. The decline has been linked to the growing vulnerability of the widely cultivated Co-0238 (Karan 4) variety to red rot disease.

In response, Co-02016 (Karan 20), developed by the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, has emerged as a possible alternative due to its reported resistance or tolerance to the disease.

Key Highlights

  • Red rot disease:
Red rot is a serious fungal disease affecting sugarcane. It damages the stalk and can lead to a decline in both cane production and sugar recovery.
  • Vulnerability due to dominant varieties:
The extensive cultivation of a single or highly dominant variety such as Co-0238 can increase the risk of widespread disease outbreaks. Limited varietal diversity can make large areas of cultivation vulnerable to the same pathogen.
  • Impact on the sugar industry:
Disease related losses reduce the volume of sugarcane available for crushing in mills. This can have wider implications for sugar production and the agricultural economy of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Emergence of Co-02016:
Co-02016, also known as Karan 20, has been developed by the ICAR Sugarcane Breeding Institute. Its reported resistance or tolerance to red rot makes it a potential alternative for sugarcane cultivation.
  • Need for crop diversification:
The situation underlines the importance of adopting disease resistant varieties, maintaining genetic diversity, strengthening disease surveillance and promoting continuous agricultural research and breeding.

Key Concepts

  • Red Rot:
A fungal disease of sugarcane commonly associated with Colletotrichum species. It causes reddish discoloration inside the stalk and can significantly affect cane yield and sugar content.
  • Varietal Resistance:
The natural ability of a crop variety to withstand or restrict damage caused by a particular pathogen. Developing and adopting resistant varieties is an important component of sustainable crop protection.
  • Genetic Uniformity:
Excessive dependence on a limited number of crop varieties can increase vulnerability to diseases. If a pathogen affects a commonly cultivated variety, a large portion of the cultivated area may be impacted.
  • ICAR Sugarcane Breeding Institute (ICAR-SBI):
A specialised agricultural research institution involved in sugarcane breeding, development of improved varieties and related research.

Way Forward

There is a need to promote disease-resistant sugarcane varieties as suitable alternatives to Co-0238. Strengthening disease surveillance, agricultural extension services and farmer awareness can help in early identification and management of outbreaks. Greater emphasis should also be placed on genetic diversification and continuous crop improvement to reduce excessive dependence on a single sugarcane variety.
