Lestes paloti

  • Context: Lestes paloti is a newly identified species of damselfly discovered in the Western Ghats of Kerala.
  • Unique Adaptation: The species exhibits seasonal colour variation, appearing brown during the dry season and turning bluish during the monsoon, which helps it blend into its surroundings.
  • Habitat: Unlike most related damselflies that are commonly found near water bodies, Lestes paloti inhabits scrub vegetation around hillocks and human settlements.
  • Taxonomic Significance: The discovery has resolved a long-standing taxonomic confusion by confirming that many earlier records of Lestes nodalis from southern India were, in fact, misidentified specimens of Lestes paloti.
  • Scientific Importance: The finding improves the understanding of damselfly diversity in the Western Ghats and highlights the need for continued taxonomic research in biodiversity-rich regions.
