El Niño Expected to Strengthen During October – December
Context
According to a forecast reported by The Indian Express, there is a more than 90% probability that the 2026 El Niño event will intensify into a very strong episode and reach its peak between October and December. However, such forecasts are probabilistic in nature and do not directly determine India’s weather conditions.
Key Findings
- El Niño refers to the abnormal warming of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, accompanied by changes in atmospheric circulation.
- The June – August Niño index stood at 1.4°C, while sea surface temperature anomalies in key regions reportedly reached 1.8°C to 3°C during August.
- El Niño can trigger or intensify droughts, floods, heatwaves and changes in tropical circulation through atmospheric teleconnections.
- Its impact on India is not uniform and depends on factors such as timing, Indian Ocean conditions, the Madden Julian Oscillation and regional weather patterns.
- Sectors such as agriculture, water storage, electricity demand and food markets may face heightened risks, requiring advance, scenario-based planning.
Way Forward
Authorities should adopt rolling, forecast-based preparedness for crops, water resources, heat-health management and power supply. Global climate indicators should be assessed alongside regional forecasts and local observations, rather than being treated as deterministic predictors of India’s weather.
